Our Vast Loneliness

I was hungry before and after I knew you:
a vampire imp, gnawing on husks,
hiding under tables, waiting for scraps.

Heavy rain falls on one-thousand islands.
A woman on a screen bleeds red, liquid light.
I’ve wasted almost all of my life.

None of that matters.
We, naked under our clothes,
laugh for the first time in 25 years,

lost in the borderlands between kingdoms,
slicing away at our dreams in the night,
a piece of the universe empty between us.
